Who is Joe talking to? “I hope we're clear on that.” Joe: “We're not clear!”[turns around] “What'd you say?” Joe: “We're not clear! You and I aren't clear about anything! We couldn't be less clear!”

Joe is saying this to his father when his father tells him not to see or be friends with Alice anymore. It was very difficult for Joel Courtney to film the scene where he had to yell at Kyle Chandler. Since Joel was naturally very quiet, J.J. Abrams had to coax him into yelling loud enough.

Who says this? “I’m just doing the best I can to save you.”

Joe says this when he rescues Alice from being strung upside down by the alien. Joe doesn’t rescue Alice alone, he rescues the sheriff and a few other people as time allows. In the summer of 2010, Joel Courtney visited his brother, an aspiring L.A. actor, attended one of his brother's acting classes, fell in love with acting, auditioned for a TV commercial in LA, was urged by an acting coach to answer a J.J. Abrams casting call, and after eleven call-backs landed the lead role of Joe Lamb.

Who is talking to Joe? “I know I don't know you at all. Even though it sort of feels like I do. Do you not feel like that?” Joe: No, no, I totally do. I'm just kind of in shock at this entire conversation.”

Alice says this to Joe when she visits his bedroom at night because she can’t sleep. Did you know that since Elle Fanning was 12 years old while filming her driving scene, it was illegal for her to actually drive, so there is another person driving the car with a mini-steering wheel in the backseat.

Who says this? “I can't believe we're breaking into the school. Who does that? Nobody does that. Idiots do that.”

Charles says this as they break into the school and find the biology teacher’s notes about the alien. The notes are important so Joe can find out as much about the alien so he can rescue Alice. Charles said this and he is also the one making the zombie movie for the international festival. Since the kids were making a zombie movie, there are several references to director George A. Romero. For example, Romero Chemicals as the evil company, plus the poster for one of his movies in Joe's bedroom and reference on the radio.

Who says this? [trying to escape the train derailment] I don't want to die!

Charles says this as he tries to escape the train derailment. It is because of him that his friends are out in the middle of the night shooting a scene at the train station. J.J. Abrams insisted that the train station scenes were actually shot at night outside, instead of in a studio.

Who says this? “Stop talking about production value, the Air Force is going to kill us.”

Cary, with a mouth full of braces says this to Charles. Charles is always looking at the production value of the scene and he sees it in the train derailment. The moving train was completely computer-generated, but in the shots of the kids moving among the wrecked train cars (shot at Agua Dulce 43 miles north of L.A.) the wrecked cars were actually there.

What is the code name of the military operation?

In the film, the code name for the military's cover up is "Operation Walking Distance". In the popular episode of The Twilight Zone "Walking Distance" a dissatisfied man returns to his hometown and finds himself as a young boy, essentially reliving his childhood and a happier way of life. Director JJ Abrams (a Twilight Zone fan) revisits his childhood with this film, echoing the classic episode.

Who said this to Dr. Woodward? “I swear to God on my mother's life, if you help us now, we will take care of you.” Dr. Woodward: “I've seen what happens … when you take care of people.”

Colonel Nelec says this in a last ditch attempt to get the data on the alien from Dr. Woodward. Dr. Woodward would not comply and so the military killed him. The green Air Force fatigues with the blue name tapes and blue insignia are correct for the 1970s era the movie portrays. The utility uniform would later change to the jungle then desert BDU.

What town did the train derailment take place?

J. J. Abrams named the film's fictional setting, Lillian, Ohio, after his grandmother. The map showing where runaway dogs were found shows it located on the north side of route 35 ten miles west of Dayton (twenty-two miles west of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base).

Who says this? “Dorks, no shoes on my upholstery.”

Donny agrees to drive them to the school but first informs the boys of the “rules” in his car, including no shoes on the upholstery. As for the kids, they were hand-picked for the roles. Approximately 5000 children were auditioned for the main parts.

Who says this referring to Charles? “Excuse me, can I have another order of fries? Because my friend here is fat.”

Cary says this to Charles in the Snack Shack Diner. In this scene where the kids are talking amongst themselves about the train wreck, Deputy Lamb can be seen through the window getting out of his patrol car at the auto dealership because, as it was originally written, the diner scene and the auto dealership scene took place simultaneously but during editing the dealership scene was moved to later.

Who is Charles attending to? Charles: “Joe, pass me that thing off the curtain. Ok, this is going to hurt a lot.” OWWWWWWWWW! OUCH! AWWWWWW!” Charles: “Jesus …! I haven't done it yet!”

Charles says this after the train crash when Martin’s leg is hurt and Charles decides he’ll put a tourniquet on it. The train crash was purposely made much more sensational than a train crash would actually be. The goal was to pay homage to the science-fiction movies of the '70s.

Who is Joe saying this to? “I know bad things happen. Bad things happen. But you can still live. You can still live.”

Joe says this to the alien, while the alien has grabbed him and held him up to his “face”. Bruce Greenwood provided the motion-capture performance of the alien. He is credited in the cast list as "Cooper", which was the creature's nickname on set. According to J.J. Abrams, the alien creature, when it finally meets Joe face-to-face, has the eyes of Caitriona Balfe, who plays Joe's mother.

Who says this, “Guys, I have never had a teacher aim a gun at me!”

Martin says this right after Dr. Woodward waves a gun and tells the kids not to say anything about the train wreck as the military will kill them and their parents. Glynn Turman portrays Dr. Woodward. Turman is a stage, television, and film actor as well as a writer, director, and producer. He is known for his roles as high school student Leroy "Preach" Jackson in the 1975 coming-of-age film Cooley High, math professor and retired Army colonel Bradford Taylor on the NBC sitcom A Different World, and fictional Baltimore mayor Clarence Royce on the HBO drama series The Wire. Glynn is recently playing Jeremiah Kaan on the Showtime series House of Lies.

The first scene of the movie shows a factory’s “Accident-Free” sign. What is the sign referring to?

The Steel Mill factory’s “Accident-Free” sign that is being updated references the accident that occurred a day ago in which Joe’s mother is killed. J.J. Abrams had the idea to start a film by showing a factory's "Accident-Free" sign long before he came up with the rest of the idea of the film. Super 8 was actually the combination of two ideas; one for a film about kids making their own movie during the 1970s, and another for a blockbuster alien invasion film. Worried that the former idea would not attract enough attendance, Abrams combined the ideas.

Who do the boys convince to pretend to hit on Donny so they can rescue Alice?

Joe, Charles, Martin, and Cary convince Jen, Charles' older sister, to pretend to hit on Donny (a worker at the camera shop) in order to get into town to rescue Alice. They break into Dr. Woodward's storage trailer and discover films and documents from his time as a government researcher. Woodward was compelled to rescue the creature now that he was touched by the alien and understood him.

Where does the alien's tunnel start?

Inside the cemetery's garage, they find a massive tunnel leading to a warren of underground caverns. In a chamber beneath the town's water tower, they find the alien has created a device from the town's stolen electronics, that it appears to be trying to fully activate. The alien also has several people, including Alice, hanging from the ceiling and unconscious, that it uses for food.

How is the alien distracted so Joe can rescue Alice?

Using Cary's firecrackers as a distraction, Joe frees Alice and the others, but they end up trapped in a dead end cavern after the alien chases them down. Alice and Cary scream and cower against the tunnel wall, but Joe steps forward and tries to talk to the alien. The creature's breath on Joe's hair during the final scene was actually J.J. Abrams waving a large sheet of cardboard up and down.

Everyone watches as various metal objects from all over town are magnetically pulled to the top of the water tower. Using the objects, and the water tower as its base, the alien assembles his spaceship.

Ever since his mother’s death, what does Joe keep in his pocket?

The locket was his mother’s, that his father gave to her on the day Joe was born. The locket was passed along to Joe after his mother's tragic death. It is repeatedly made clear throughout the film how much he values this locket as a memory of her. In the end scene, the locket is then drawn from Joe's pocket towards the tower and Joe, after a brief moment, decides to let it go, completing the ship. If you recall, the alien touched Joe, and now Joe is part of the alien, necklace and all.

What song do the boys sing as they wait for Alice to give them a ride?

Originally, when the boys were sitting and waiting for Alice to pick them up, they were supposed to just talk. However, J.J. Abrams heard the boys singing together between takes later on, and re-shot the scene featuring them singing "My Sharona. As for the other songs, "Don't Bring Me Down" by Electric Light Orchestra, The Blondie song "Heart of Glass" and The Cars song "Bye Bye Love" are also featured in the film.

During the community meeting, who do the townspeople think are causing all the troubles in their town?

The townspeople are sure it’s a soviet invasion. At that time period that would be a reasonable explanation rather than an alien invasion. During the town hall meeting, for a brief second you can spot Elle Fanning's big sister, Dakota Fanning, among the assistants. She and J.J. Abrams had cameo appearances. J.J. Abrams is dressed as a soldier coming out of the jeep at 01:08:15 into the movie.
