Germophobic? This Outbreak trivia quiz is for you!
About This Quiz
There is an outbreak of a fictional Ebola-like virus - first in Zaire and later in a small town in the United States. Recall how easily a virus can spread to epidemic proportions, and also how far military and civilian agencies might go to contain the spread of a deadly, contagious disease.
Where is the first outbreak found, in 1967?
In the African jungles of Zaire, the virus is discovered by the military, as infected solders are dying. The rich, dense forests of the African jungle were actually filmed in Kauai, Hawaii. What might have helped initial box office sales was the fact that a real-life outbreak of the Ebola virus was occurring in Zaire when the film was released.
What does the military do to contain the virus?
In order to contain the virus called Motaba, which is causing a deadly fever, the military destroys the army camp where soldiers were infected. Prior to the bombing, they take blood samples and develop a cure for the virus. However, they can only cure the non-airborne virus, not a new strain of Motaba. Did you know the movie Outbreak is loosely based on Richard Preston's nonfiction book, The Hot Zone?
Who was present in 1967 and knows about the virus and the bombing?
Both U.S. Army officer Donald McClintock and U.S. Army officer William Ford were involved in the 1967 plan to bomb the army camp and contain the virus. Donald McClintock is portrayed by Donald Sutherland, a Canadian actor whose award-winning film career spans six decades. Sutherland has been nominated for eight Golden Globe Awards, winning two, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award. An inductee of both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Canadian Walk of Fame, Sutherland has also received a Canadian Academy Award for the film Threshold. Several media outlets and movie critics describe him as one of the best actors who has never been nominated for an Oscar.
What is the relationship between Sam Daniels and (now) Brigadier General William Ford?
Brigadier General "Billy" Ford is Daniels' superior. The general is played by Morgan Freeman, an actor, producer, and narrator. Freeman won an Academy Award in 2005 for Best Supporting Actor for Million Dollar Baby, and he has received Oscar nominations for Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Invictus. He has also won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Morgan Freeman is ranked as the 3rd highest box office star with over $4.316 billion total box office gross, an average of $74.4 million per film.
What does Sam Daniels do for a living?
Colonel Sam Daniels is a virologist with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. General Ford is his boss, who sends him to Zaire when the virus resurfaces. Colonel Daniels is portrayed by Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman is known for his versatile portrayals of antiheroes and vulnerable characters. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1980 for Kramer vs. Kramer, and in 1989 for Rain Man. Along with two Academy Award wins, Hoffman has been nominated for five additional Academy Awards, and he was nominated for 13 Golden Globes, winning six (including an honorary award). He has won four BAFTAs, three Drama Desk Awards, two Emmy Awards, and a Genie Award. Hoffman received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1999 and the Kennedy Center Honors Award in 2012.
Sam Daniels has his own crew, including who else?
Daniels’ crew includes Lieutenant Colonel Casey Schuler and the new recruit, Major Salt. They go to Zaire with Daniels to gather information and return to the United States. Lieutenant Colonel Casey is portrayed by Kevin Spacey, an actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, and singer. He received two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for The Usual Suspects, and for Best Actor in American Beauty. In Broadway theater, Spacey won a Tony Award for his role in Lost in Yonkers. For his role in House of Cards, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and two consecutive Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
What does Major Salt do when they go to Zaire?
Although Major Salt is book-smart, knowing the symptoms of the virus and seeing the symptoms of the virus are two different things. Seeing how the virus affected the villagers upsets him and he vomits in his suit. He pulls off his face mask, possibly exposing himself and putting the crew in jeopardy. Major Salt is portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr., who is best known for his performance in Boyz n the Hood, his Academy Award–winning role in Jerry Maguire, and his portrayal of O.J. Simpson in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. He has also appeared in films such as As Good as It Gets, American Gangster, Lee Daniels' The Butler, and Selma, playing civil rights attorney Fred Gray.
What is the profession of Daniels' ex-wife?
Roberta “Robby” Keough is a CDC scientist; she is in the same field as her ex-husband. Roberta or “Robby” is portrayed by Rene Russo, an actress, producer, and former model. She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Nightcrawler. Rene Russo has played the female lead in box-office hits, including Lethal Weapon 3 and 4, In the Line of Fire, Get Shorty, Tin Cup, Ransom, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Yours, Mine and Ours.
What is Daniels’ FIRST clue that there is something suspicious about the virus?
Daniels asks his superior, Brigadier General William Ford, to issue an alert, but Ford tells Daniels the virus is unlikely to spread. The General rattles off all the times Daniels has been wrong. This is Daniels' first clue that something isn't right. When Daniels investigates the village in Zaire, several of the huts are burned down. Did you know that this is the traditional tribal method for controlling the spread of an infection in many parts of the world? Food and water are left outside the entrance to the dwelling and the occupants cannot leave. If during several days (usually 3 or 4) these supplies are not used, then the dwelling is burned down to stop the infection from spreading.
What is the carrier of the disease?
A white-headed capuchin monkey, is the carrier of the virus. This monkey also appears in the sitcom Friends as Marcel, Ross' pet. The monkey's prior role in Outbreak was spoofed by a poster showing Marcel as the star in the fictional movie Outbreak 2: The Virus Takes Manhattan. Both the movie and the TV series are Warner Bros. productions.
How does the carrier monkey make her way to California?
James "Jimbo" Scott—an employee of the Biotest Animal Holding Facility in San Jose, California —steals the monkey and brings her to Cedar Creek, California, to sell on the black market. Jimbo is portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, an American actor and race-car driver, best known for his role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy. He has won and been nominated for this role by the Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and People’s Choice Awards. He has also starred in Enchanted, Made of Honor, Valentine's Day, Flypaper, Freedom Writers, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
A little girl gives the monkey what name?
The monkey is now called Betsy, named by a little girl who feeds the monkey apples. Betsy will only come when the little girl calls her. Kara Keough portrays the little girl who befriends Betsy. She is an actress, now an adult, known for Outbreak, Miracle in Lane 2, and The Real Housewives of Orange County. She is married to Kyle Bosworth and they have one child.
What is Jimbo going to do with Betsy?
Jimbo smuggles the monkey out of the Biotest Animal Holding Facility and tries to sell it to a pet store. The pet store owner won’t take the monkey because it’s a female and he needs a male. Meanwhile, the monkey infects both Jimbo and the pet store owner. The monkey is a white-headed Capuchin, a species native to Central and South America. This conflicts with the setting of the original virus in Zaire, Africa.
Besides Jimbo and the pet store owner, who does Betsy infect?
While in the pet shop, Jimbo places Betsy's cage on the counter, which is right next to another monkey. While no one is looking, the monkey steals Betsy's half-eaten banana. Also, Jimbo takes Betsy out of the cage, and Rudy, the shop owner, checks to see what sex she is. He grabs her kind of roughly, and, in self-defense, Betsy scratches him on the forearm.
Since Jimbo can’t sell the monkey, what does he do with Betsy?
Jimbo releases the monkey into the wild, in a forested area close to Cedar Creek, California. Jimbo is heading home to Boston and doesn’t want to deal with a smuggled monkey. Ever wonder how the Capuchin monkey got its name? They are named for Capuchin friars because of their black or brown bodies, with white chests, faces and throats. Their heads are topped by what looks like a little black cap. Their bodies are anywhere from 12-22 inches in length, and their tails are as long as their bodies.
Who does Jimbo meet when he exits the airplane?
Jimbo, who is infected, looks horrible while he is flying home. He is greeted by his girlfriend, Alice. Jimbo gives her a big kiss, then gets progressively worse, until he dies in the hospital. Alice also dies, a short time after that. The girlfriend is played by Kellie Overbey, an actress and writer, known for That's What She Said, The Job, and Sweet and Lowdown.
What are the names of Sam Daniels' two dogs?
Sam and Robbie never had children - they had dogs instead, named Henry and Lewis. When Sam is giving Henry and Lewis a bath, you can clearly hear him saying their names. He then scolds the dogs for getting out of the tub while he is on the phone. He immediately relents when the dogs respond with puppy-dog eyes. The general consensus is that the dogs look like they are St. Bernard mixes.
How does the disease spread among the Cedar Creek population?
A lab technician is infected when he carelessly opens and reaches into a centrifuge while it's still spinning, breaking a vial of infected blood and cutting his hand. Then he goes to a movie, while infected with the new airborne virus, and he spreads it there. In real life, lids on centrifuges lock until the spinning has completely stopped; it's impossible to open one while it's still in motion. Therefore, to open that, the lock would have had to be broken.
Why does Daniels fly to Cedar Creek, against orders?
Daniels learns about the infection and flies to Cedar Creek, against Ford's orders, joining Keough's team with Schuler and Salt. As they begin a search for the host animal, the U.S. Army quarantines the town and imposes martial law. In the film, it is said that "Motaba" is more deadly than the "Ebola" virus. Then they show a picture of the "Motaba" virus. The virus shown in the photograph is a strain of Ebola.
How does Schuler get infected?
Sam and Casey get into an argument because Sam is being his usual obstinate self and insisting they've overlooked something. Casey tells Sam he should get some sleep, which only makes Sam angrier. Sam snaps that Casey should get some sleep. Casey jokes about having slept in July. The next shot is Sam having given in to sleep, and Casey still working, until he starts to fall asleep on his feet — which is why he walks away without unhooking and tears his suit. If he had only listened to his own advice!
How does Robby get infected?
Robby accidentally sticks herself with a contaminated needle. Robby looks a little bit feverish, her eyes are a little fever-bright, and her hair is slightly disheveled. It's been a matter of hours, at most a day, between Casey becoming infected and Robby becoming infected. Did you notice that even once Robby has entered the later stages, her makeup has been made to make her look pale and dried out? However, she is not bleeding from her face like Casey was at the same stage.
What does it mean when Ford provides an experimental serum to treat the sick?
Ford provides an experimental serum to treat the sick. However, the serum is only good on the non-airborne virus, not the mutation. This helps Daniels to realize that Ford was aware of the virus before the outbreak. He confronts Ford, who admits that he withheld information because of the potential for Motaba to be used as a biological agent.
What is Operation Clean Sweep?
Daniels learns about Operation Clean Sweep, a plan for the military to bomb Cedar Creek, in order to contain the virus. This plan has been approved by the president. Major General Donald McClintock plans to use the operation to conceal the virus's existence so it can still be used as a biological agent.
What are the various strategies that are used to prevent Daniels from finding a cure?
Daniels gets the control tower to reroute his airplane to Cedar Creek, although he is supposed to investigate a different outbreak. Next, Daniel escapes when the military looks for him in the hospital. Salt and Daniels lie with the patients. General McClintock also broadcasts Daniels’ and Salt’s faces as people who have the virus. Finally, this is what General Donald McClintock says to Daniels when he is bringing Betsy to the Cedar Creek Hospital: “With all due respect, Colonel Daniels, if you do not follow us to Travis Air Force Base, I will blow you out of the sky.”
When Salt tells Daniels he is crazy for wanting to fly to the boat that contained the monkey, how does Daniels respond?
Daniels answers, “We are fugitives of the law. Idiocy is our only option.” As they fly, Daniels asks if they will run out of gas. Salt comments that their Loach (Hughes H-6) will go 400 miles without refueling. The Hughes H-6's real range is only 267 miles.
How does Daniels find Betsy the monkey?
Salt flies a helicopter to the ship which carried Betsy. Daniels finds a picture of Betsy and then flies to the local TV station to appeal to viewers to call in if they have seen the monkey. Mrs. Jeffries realizes that her daughter Kate has been playing with Betsy in their yard, and she calls the CDC. Daniels and Salt arrive at the Jeffries' house, and Salt tranquilizes Betsy after Kate coaxes her out of hiding.
How do Daniels and Salt trick General Donald McClintock and the other piloted aircraft into thinking that their helicopter crashed?
Returning with the monkey, Daniels and Salt are chased by McClintock and two other aircraft. Salt fires two rockets into the trees to trick McClintock into thinking that the helicopter crashed. Then he flies low, under the radar, so their flight is undetected and, once landed, untracked. There is a small inconsistency when Colonel Daniels commandeers the H-6. You'll note Salt and Danials put on headsets that are hanging in the helicopter. Since all military helicopter pilots and aircrew wear helmets with integrated ICS, there is no reason why any headsets would ever reasonably be hanging in a military helicopter.
Who is Casey talking to? Casey: “How many brain cells did I kill?” “How many? About a billion.” Casey: Oh, now I'm only as smart as you.” “What can we give him to kill his sense of humor?”
Casey is talking to Daniels after he has acquired the virus. Later, Casey talks to Robby, when the virus is in its advanced stages and he asks her to hold his hand, even though she is already holding it. He also tells her to like Daniels, that Daniels is a nice guy. Did you know the film cast includes four Oscar winners: Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and Cuba Gooding, Jr.?
If the serum has been created, why would they still bomb the town?
In Cedar Creek, Salt mixes Betsy's antibodies with Ford's serum to create an antiserum. It proves effective. Although it is too late for Casey, who has died, they save Robby. McClintock returns to the base and resumes Operation Clean Sweep, refusing to listen to Ford who wants to cancel it because they have the virus. McClintock wants to use the virus for biological warfare, which means he needs to wipe out both the town and the virus.
What is the name of the pilot who flies the bomber?
Daniels and Salt fly a helicopter into the path of the bomber, which is commanded by a pilot codenamed Sandman One. With Ford's help, Daniels persuades Sandman One and his co-pilot to detonate the bomb over water and spare the town. Did you know that “the Sandman” is fictional man, supposed to make children sleep by sprinkling sand in their eyes? The name is often used to personify sleep itself.
What is the charge against McClintock?
Before McClintock can order another bombing, Ford relieves him of his command and arrests him for withholding information from the President. Daniels and Robby reconcile, and Cedar Creek's residents are cured. Did you know the Motaba virus was imagined for the movie and does not actually exist? The closest virus would be Ebola.
Who says this? “What a wonderful moment this must be for you!”
Here is the full quote - General Donald McClintock: “You silly, sentimental son of a bitch. Nobody puts me under arrest. Nobody.” [Col. Briggs bars his path with a sidearm] “Colonel Briggs. What a wonderful moment this must be for you!” Throughout the movie, General McClintock has been blaming Briggs for all the mishaps, as well as telling Briggs that he will never make General.
