About This Quiz

X marks the spot! When it comes to buried treasure, this is usually true, but this is always true when it comes to algebra! When it comes to these simple equations, can you quickly solve for "x?"

When you begin school, everyone starts off with the basic information. You first need to learn your numbers before you can apply them to anything. The basics begin with being proud to learn that 1 + 1 = 2. Once you mastered addition, you probably moved on to two- and three-digit numbers. Your math education soon grew to learning about subtraction, multiplication, and division. As you and your math knowledge grew, you probably learned about parentheses, exponents, and the order of operations. After learning about proper and improper fractions, as well as mixed numbers, you were able to finally move on to your first math subject - algebra!

As far as math subjects go, algebra is often considered the simplest form before subjects like geometry, trigonometry and calculus. Algebra mostly deals with variables that you are told to solve in a given equation. While you might see other variables like a, b, c or y, "x" is usually the most common. Can you solve for "x" in these simple equations?

You'll be asked questions like "Solve for X when: 2x + 16 = -4." If you can solve this simple equation, you're definitely ready for this quiz! Put away those calculators and gear up your brain! Let's go!

3x - 41 = 61

You would first add 41 to both sides to get 3x = 102. Then divide both sides by 3 to get x = 34.

3x + 3 = 33

Subtract 3 from both sides of the equation. When you are left with 3x = 30, divide both sides by 3. You should get x = 10.

4 = x - 5

Add five to both sides to get x = 9

7x + 1 = 43

First subtract 1 from both sides. You'd be left with 7x = 42. 42 is divided by 7 six times. This would give you the answer of 6.

5x + 37 = 7

For this problem, you would first subtract 37 from both sides to get 5x = -30. You would then divide both sides of the equation by 5 to get x = -6.

x - 20 = 30

This is a simple problem! All you need to do is add 20 to both sides to get x = 50.

3 = 9 - x

You can start by adding x to both sides. You'll be left with x + 3 = 9. Subtract from both sides to get x = 6.

36 = 5x + 1

Subtract 1 from both sides. Then divide by 5. You should get x = 7.

18x = -54

For this equation, you would simply divide both sides by 18. 18 goes into 54 even three times, but since 54 is negative, you answer would have to be -3.

-4x = 36

36 is an easy multiple of 4. 36 is divided evenly by 4 nine times. Since one of your factors is -4, the other factor would also have to be negative to get a positive 36. This makes the answer -9.

2 = 3 - x

First start by adding x to both sides of the equation. You'll have x + 2 = 3. Subtract 2 from both sides to get x = 1.

8 + 3x = 20

Start by subtracting 8 from both sides. You should be left with 3x = 12. Divide by 3 to get x = 4.

14x - 15 = -1

In order to solve this equation, you would add 15 to both sides, making the right side of the equation 14. You would then divide by 14 to get x = 1.

3d + 10d = 130

First add both variables together on the left. You would have 13d = 130. After dividing both sides by 13, you would be left with d = 10.

8 = x - 1

All you have to do is add 1 to both sides to get x = 9.

24 = 6 + 6x

Subtract 6 from both sides. Then divide by 6 to get x = 3.

-10x = -20

20 divided by 10 is equal to 2. Since both numbers are negative, this would make your answer positive. So 2 is the answer.

2x - 5 = 7

First add five to both sides to get 2x = 12. Then divide by two to get the solution that x = 6.

0 = x - 7

All you need to do is add 7 to both sides of the equation to get x = 7.

16 = 9 + 1x

All you have to do is subtract 9 from both sides. Any number divided by itself is 1 so your answer will be x = 7.

-12x - 70 = -22

For this equation, you'd first add 70 to both sides, making the right side of the equation equal to -48. 12 goes into 48 four times. Since both are negative, your answer would have to be positive. The answer is 4.

-3x + 40 = -5

Start off by subtracting 40 from both sides of the equation to get that -3x = -45. Divide both sides by -3. You should get positive 15 since you're dividing a negative by a negative.

0 = 5 - x

For this solution, all you have to do is add x to both sides to get x = 5.

18 = 4 + 7x

Subtract 4 from both sides to get 14 = 7x. Then divide by 7 to get x = 2.

11x - 86 = 2

Start by adding 86 to both sides. You'll then have 11x = 88. 11 divides evenly into 88 eight times. This would give you the answer of 8.

x - 15 = 5

All you need to do is add! Add 15 to both sides and you'll get that x = 20!

12 = -6 + 3x

Add six to both sides of the equation. You'll be left with 18 = 3x. Divide both sides by 3 to get x = 6.

4 + 4x = 16

Subtract 4 from both sides of the equation. You'll have 4x = 12. Divide by 4 to get x = 3.

-5x = 0

There's no math you need to do for this equation. In order for any product to give you an answer of zero, you have to multiply it by zero. This means x has to equal 0.

4x + 3x = 35

First add 4x and 3x together to get 7x = 35. Then divide both sides by 7 to get x = 5.

1 = x + 1

For this solution, all you have to do is subtract 1 from both sides to get x = 0.

54 = -18 + 9x

Add 18 to both sides. You should get 72 = 9x. Divide both sides by 9 to get x = 8.

8x = 32

32 is an easy multiple of 8. Your answer should be 4.

3x - 2 = 2x + 3

You can start off by adding 2 to both sides of the equation. Then you can subtract 2x from 3x to get x = 5.

x - 5 = 5 - x

Start by adding x to both sides of the equation. Then add five to both sides of the equation. You'll have 2x = 10. Divide both sides by 2 to get x = 5.
